Rachel Reeves Faces Backlash Over HGV VED Holiday Confusion
Reeves Under Fire for Unclear HGV Tax Holiday Plan

Rachel Reeves is about to shamelessly walk all over drivers - and she won't face the music. The Chancellor has announced another unbaked plan, leaving HGV haulage firms uncertain about their next steps.

Confusion Over New VED Holiday

Rachel Reeves has just done something truly laughable. The Chancellor has announced a massive new tax scheme and then revealed no information on what it will actually look like. Can it get any more silly? As rising petrol and diesel fees left HGV and haulage firms struggling with costs, the Chancellor came under immediate pressure to act. Labour eventually confirmed a 12-month Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) holiday for hauliers. The Treasury stressed this would be a 12-month holiday, with firms paying just £1 at renewal. The plan would supposedly save £600 for a heavy lorry and £912 for some of the biggest vehicles on the road.

However, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) has now stressed that confusion surrounds the new scheme. No one has a clue what is happening. Apparently, hauliers want more information on timings, eligibility, and how the scheme will run. The RHA said: “We continue to engage with DVLA and are awaiting more detailed operational guidance. Once we have this, we will release further information.” The RHA has determined that the new discount will launch from July 1, but when are hauliers set to receive all the information they need? It looks like a case of Labour desperately scrambling together a plan to stave off concerns without any idea how it’s all meant to be put together. That’s almost as bad as no plan at all.

Limited Impact Warning

The RHA doesn’t even seem pleased by the new tax holiday, warning that the plan would only have a “limited impact” as haulage firms are already on the brink. If Reeves wanted to help hauliers, why didn't she just engage with industry and give them the immediate essential user rebate they are calling for? The RHA said this would allow haulage firms to reduce their bills, offering more immediate support to firms struggling.

Haulage has already taken a serious hit this spring, with several firms dropping into administration and liquidation. It's a serious blow to one of the nation's most important sectors. We all rely on haulage every day to transport our goods across the country. If the sector needs support, Reeves must deliver it now.

In a statement to Express.co.uk, HM Treasury said: “The VED holiday will automatically apply to eligible HGVs when they come to renew their road tax after 1 July, so HGV operators don’t need to do anything differently in order to benefit. HMT and DVLA have engaged with the Road Haulage Association and wider industry following the announcement and remain in active dialogue with the sector to ensure hauliers have clear guidance ahead of implementation.”
