A refuse collector has shared the most common recycling mistake that could result in your bins being left uncollected. Known online as 'No1 Binman', Ashley regularly offers advice on social media to help households avoid problems with waste collection.
Why Bins Are Sometimes Left Behind
It can be frustrating to leave your bin out only to find it hasn't been emptied. Ashley explains that recycling rules are stricter because a single incorrect item can contaminate an entire truckload, making it unrecyclable. Common non-recyclable items include crisp packets and polystyrene, even if they bear recycling logos.
Checking the Top Layers
Ashley revealed that bin collectors often only inspect the top layers of recycling bins. If they see a black bag, they will assume it is general waste and leave the bin. He also warned that flies, maggots, or bad smells indicate contamination from food waste.
Tips to Ensure Collection
To prevent odours and pests, Ashley advises rinsing out food packaging before recycling. "Just rinse it out," he said. "It's not that hard, and it stops flies and smells." He also emphasised that black bags should never go in recycling bins.
Check Local Rules
Recycling regulations vary between councils, so Ashley recommends contacting your local council to confirm specific requirements.
