A total of 28 bank branches are set to close across the UK in August and September 2026, continuing a trend that has sparked concern among pensioners who depend on in-person banking services. The closures affect major high street banks including Halifax, Lloyds, NatWest, and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Banks Cite Shift to Digital Banking
Providers have stated that the closures are driven by a growing number of customers switching to online and mobile banking. However, the pace of branch shutdowns has raised alarms, particularly among older Britons who may lack confidence in digital alternatives.
The Civil Service Pensioners' Alliance warned that the closures are “creating real barriers to everyday financial independence” for thousands of pensioners. The group emphasised that “a visit to a local branch allows people to withdraw cash, ask questions and deal with problems directly with a member of staff,” adding that without such access, many older individuals will be left struggling.

Banks' Mitigation Measures
Major high street banks have assured that they are working to ensure affected customers receive support through alternative channels, such as Community Bankers. These services aim to provide face-to-face assistance in local communities despite branch closures.
