Fuente Obejuna, a small village in the province of Córdoba, has been identified as the cheapest place to buy a home in Spain during the second quarter of 2026, according to figures from Spanish property website Idealista. The average asking price stands at just €369 (£314) per square metre, a fraction of the cost in popular coastal destinations like Marbella, where prices average €5,581 (£4,750) per square metre.
Why Prices Are So Low
The low prices are largely due to Fuente Obejuna's location as a rural inland village, far from Spain's busy coastline. Like many inland communities, it has experienced depopulation as younger residents move to larger cities such as Córdoba, Seville, and Madrid for work. This has left many older family homes vacant, and many cheaper properties require renovation before they are habitable.
Historical and Cultural Charm
Despite its low property prices, the village is rich in history and culture. It is famous throughout Spain for the play Fuenteovejuna by Lope de Vega, based on real events in 1476 when villagers united against a cruel local ruler. The phrase "Fuente Obejuna did it" has become a well-known historical saying. The village retains its traditional Andalusian charm, with the main square, Plaza Lope de Vega, surrounded by cafés and historic buildings, and the 15th-century Church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo sitting on the site of a former medieval fortress.
Attractions and Amenities
Another notable building is the Palacete Moderno, which houses the tourist office and a museum covering the area's history from prehistoric and Roman times. Just outside the village are the remains of the ancient Roman settlement of Mellaria, and the surrounding countryside offers rolling hills, oak woodland, and walking routes near the Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park. The area is also known for its traditional food, including Iberian ham, cured meats, and locally produced wines.
