Real Madrid have reportedly hijacked Manchester United's negotiations to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with the Spanish giants now in talks to secure an £80 million deal for the 21-year-old.
Fernandes set for West Ham exit after relegation
Fernandes is expected to leave West Ham this summer following the club's relegation from the Premier League. The Portuguese midfielder, who joined West Ham from Southampton for £38 million plus £4 million in add-ons last year, has attracted significant interest from several top clubs.
Manchester United had already begun negotiations over a deal for Fernandes, while Arsenal, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain have also expressed interest. However, according to Spanish newspaper AS, Real Madrid have now moved ahead in the race for his signature.
Mourinho makes Fernandes a priority
Jose Mourinho, who returned to Real Madrid as head coach, has made the signing of Fernandes one of his top priorities. The report states that Mourinho has 'complete confidence' that the West Ham midfielder can make an immediate impact at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Super-agent Jorge Mendes, who represents both Mourinho and Fernandes, is reportedly already working on a deal to bring the midfielder to Madrid. Mourinho is also keen for Madrid to sign Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand, who has attracted interest from both Manchester United and Arsenal.
United agree deal for Ederson
Meanwhile, Manchester United have already agreed a £35 million deal to sign Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta. However, the 26-year-old's arrival at Old Trafford will be delayed after he received a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad.
West Ham are demanding an £80 million transfer fee for Fernandes, who has also been linked with a move to other Premier League clubs. The Hammers are determined to secure a substantial fee for their star player as they prepare for life in the Championship.
