Newcastle United's pursuit of Osasuna winger Victor Munoz could force a difficult decision regarding Harvey Barnes this summer. The Magpies are actively targeting the Spanish youngster, who is on sporting director Ross Wilson's shortlist ahead of the transfer window opening next week.
Barnes valued at £40 million
Harvey Barnes could command a fee of around £40 million for Newcastle once trading begins. Aston Villa are reportedly keen on signing the 16-goal forward. Despite already losing Anthony Gordon, who scored 17 goals, Newcastle chiefs have not ruled out any player's departure as they look to negotiate deals in the market.
Barnes has two years remaining on his current contract at St James' Park. Since joining Newcastle for £38 million in 2023, he has netted 30 goals for the club.
Howe's stance on replacements
Head coach Eddie Howe would seek assurances that Barnes would be adequately replaced if sold. However, he is aware that unpopular sales may be necessary during what club sources describe as "a complex summer."
Barnes is a natural choice to succeed Gordon on the left wing but has also proven effective on the right flank. He made five appearances in the Champions League on the right, scoring four goals in the competition, and also scored against Barcelona while playing on the left. In the Premier League, he played eight times on the right, scoring four goals from that position.
Speaking about Barnes' versatility last season, Howe said: "We've really tried to focus on Harvey's game and his training and try to see it as an opportunity to improve him while he's out of the team, while recognising his qualities and knowing that we want him in the team. That's a very difficult thing because we probably didn't have the balance of the side right early season. We were trying players in different positions to try and find a way to make that work. We didn't probably have the right outcome then."
