Passengers aboard a Tianjin Airlines flight were left terrified when a portable power bank overheated, filling the cabin with thick smoke mid-flight. The incident occurred on 15 June as the aircraft was preparing to land at Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport in Guangdong Province.
Emergency Response
Cabin crew swiftly responded to the situation, with a tannoy announcement warning: "There is a fire situation in the cabin. We are organising firefighting protocols, please remain calm and do not panic." One passenger recalled that while no flames were visible, the "smell was very strong."
The Airbus A320neo had departed from Tianjin Binhai International Airport at 6:49 am local time and landed safely at 9:17 am. Following the landing, passengers were instructed to disembark without their luggage before being allowed to retrieve their belongings.
Airline Statement
A representative for Tianjin Airlines stated: "On 15 June, flight GS7829 from Tianjin to Jieyang experienced a situation where a passenger's power bank began emitting smoke. Crew members discovered it immediately and handled it appropriately according to procedures. No one was injured, there was no damage to aircraft facilities or equipment, and the flight landed safely."
The airline reminded passengers to ensure power banks meet 3C certification and other relevant requirements. The incident caused a delay of approximately one hour and 12 minutes.
Global Context
This alarming episode comes amid a global tightening of regulations on power banks by airlines and aviation authorities, following an increase in thermal runaway incidents. Tianjin Airlines currently permits power banks in hand luggage but strictly prohibits them in checked baggage.
