The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has issued a reminder to drivers aged 70 and over who are due to renew their driving licence. The message urges them to complete the process online, which is completely free and straightforward.
Why Renewal Is Needed
Drivers aged 70 and above must renew their licences every three years, unlike younger motorists who renew every ten years. The DVLA shared a post on X, stating: "Are you 70 or over and due to renew your driving licence? Do it for free! Grab a cuppa and renew today at gov.uk/renewat70. It's easy, quick and secure."
Online Renewal Process
If you are 70 or over, or will turn 70 within the next 90 days, you can renew your driving licence online at no cost. Applications are processed within one week. You can use this service if:
- Your British licence has expired or is due to expire within 90 days
- You live in Great Britain (Northern Ireland has a separate service)
- You meet the minimum eyesight requirement
- You are not disqualified from driving
You can also update your licence photo during renewal. However, renewals for C1 (medium-sized vehicles) or D1 (minibus) entitlements must be done by post.
First-Time Users
If using the service for the first time, you need to register with an email address, your residential addresses for the past three years, your National Insurance number (if known), and a valid UK passport number (if updating your photo). After submission, the DVLA will send a confirmation email.
Driving While Renewing
You can continue driving while your application is being processed, provided:
- Your doctor approves you to drive
- You held a valid licence
- You comply with previous licence conditions
- Your application is less than one year old
- Your last licence was not revoked for medical reasons
- You are not currently disqualified
- You were not disqualified as a high-risk offender on or after 1 June 2013
Renewing by Post
Alternatively, you can apply by post using the D46P application form, which the DVLA sends automatically 90 days before your 70th birthday. If you do not have this form, use the D1 application available at most Post Offices. Your licence should arrive within three weeks, though it may take longer if medical or personal details need verification.
