Arne Slot Sacked by Liverpool After Rio Ngumoha Breakthrough Season
Arne Slot Sacked by Liverpool After Rio Ngumoha Praise

Arne Slot was sacked by Liverpool last month following a turbulent second season at Anfield. The Dutch manager, who led the Reds to the Premier League title in 2025, was dismissed shortly after the 2025-26 campaign ended. He has since been replaced by Andoni Iraola.

Slot's Downfall at Liverpool

Despite high-profile signings last summer, Liverpool fell away from the title race early. Slot managed to secure Champions League qualification but could not save his job. In an open letter to supporters, he said: "This club will always judge itself by the biggest honours. That is how it should be."

Rio Ngumoha's Breakthrough

Teenage winger Rio Ngumoha emerged as a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season. He scored a dramatic winner against Newcastle in August, days before his 17th birthday, and added a goal against Fulham in April. That strike at Anfield came in only his second league start.

Slot was full of praise for Ngumoha, saying: "He has such a special quality which you don't see a lot in football anymore: dominating the one-v-one situation. And that's exactly what he did when he scored his goal, making the ball free by twisting and turning and then hitting it in like a Mo Salah finish."

Slot added: "I think I've said a few weeks, maybe months ago, that his playing time would increase because he got stronger and stronger... There was more and more end product to what he did."

Ngumoha's International Rise

Ngumoha made 29 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions. He earned his England debut in a 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand, playing on the right flank and winning the player of the match award. Jude Bellingham presented him with his first cap in the dressing room.

Despite missing out on Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad, Ngumoha's performances have attracted interest from Bayern Munich. Liverpool, however, are determined to keep the teenager, whom Slot tipped for a long career at Anfield.
