Roy Keane warns Man Utd: Bruno Fernandes could be tempted by Saudi riches
Keane warns United over Fernandes' Saudi temptation

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has issued a stark warning to his former club, suggesting that Bruno Fernandes could return from the World Cup with his head turned by the prospect of significantly higher wages elsewhere. The United captain was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last summer but ultimately remained at Old Trafford, despite the club appearing open to his departure.

The 31-year-old Portuguese international now has just over a year remaining on his current deal, which includes a £57 million release clause. This has kept Fernandes' long-term future at the club a subject of ongoing debate, even though he turned down a lucrative three-year contract with Al-Hilal nearly 12 months ago.

Keane's concerns over World Cup influence

Keane believes Fernandes could face mounting pressure to leave United this summer when he joins his international teammates at the World Cup. Several of his Portugal colleagues, including Ruben Neves, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Joao Felix, are currently playing in the Saudi Pro League, and Keane suggests they could influence Fernandes' decision.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane said: "The problem is, come the summer he'll be going away to the World Cup and he'll be with a lot of his team-mates and they'll be getting into his head because he'll be thinking he's a year older now and he was making a lot of noise last summer, and his agent. You know he plays them games as well."

Keane added: "He's on a decent contract at United but he maybe wanted a bit more and when he's surrounded by them lads who are in Saudi Arabia, they'll be getting to him. But that's the game yeah, I'm not knocking him for that, that's just part of the territory."

Presenter David Jones interjected: "You've got to pay the best." Keane responded: "Yeah, but he's on a pretty decent deal at United. I'm guessing and he's got a year left and he's talking about bringing the best to United so sometimes you've got to focus on the contract you're on and not be getting your head turned like he did last summer. Now that was not all him, that was probably the club as well but stay focused on the contract you're on."

Fernandes' commitment to United

Despite the speculation, Fernandes has consistently indicated his desire to remain at Manchester United. The club's standout performer has emphasised that his deep connection with the club means achieving success there would be far more fulfilling than anywhere else.

"It's not a question of loyalty," Fernandes explained. "I could have gone two years ago, I could have gone three years ago, I could have gone last season, but I really like to be here. I think that being successful at this club is something that I can never get at another club. The joy and everything I get, the day I get what I want from this club, I don't think I will get that from any other club in the world."

Fernandes has made no secret of his ambition to deliver Premier League glory to Old Trafford. "I know how much the fans want this, I know how passionate they are," he continued. "I know how much they are waiting for the club to come back again. I'm on the same ship as them. I want this ship; instead of being steady, I want it to go forward and to navigate as much as we can."

Reflecting on his achievements so far, Fernandes added: "Yeah, I won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup [but] what this club wants, what these fans want and what I want, myself and the team, we haven't got that yet. Until my contract expires, I'm going to try."

With a new contract expected to be offered by United, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether Fernandes remains a key figure at Old Trafford or seeks a new challenge elsewhere.
