The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has released an urgent update concerning the £299 cost of living payments, a crucial financial aid for millions of struggling households across the UK.
In a recent announcement, the DWP cautioned that some eligible claimants may experience delays in receiving their payments. The department has urged all potential recipients to verify their eligibility status as soon as possible to avoid missing out on this vital support.
Who qualifies for the £299 payment?
The payment forms part of the government's ongoing support package to help vulnerable families cope with rising living costs. To qualify, claimants must be receiving one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support
- Pension Credit
- Working Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
Payment schedule and potential delays
While the majority of payments are being processed automatically between February 6 and February 22, 2024, the DWP has acknowledged that some cases might take longer due to verification requirements or account issues.
Important note: The payment reference will appear as 'DWP COL' followed by the claimant's National Insurance number on bank statements.
What to do if you haven't received your payment
If you believe you qualify but haven't received your payment by February 23, the DWP recommends:
- Double-checking your eligibility criteria
- Waiting until the payment window closes (February 22)
- Contacting the relevant benefits office if payment still hasn't arrived
The department has stressed that claimants should be wary of scam messages pretending to be from the DWP regarding these payments. Official communications will never ask for personal or banking details via text or email.
