American Airlines has announced the temporary cancellation of select routes in August and September, citing rising jet fuel prices linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. The airline confirmed to CBS News that the adjustments are part of efforts to manage higher operating costs.
While some flights will be removed from the schedule during the late-summer travel season, American Airlines emphasised that the changes are not permanent. “American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
Affected customers will be offered rebooking options on alternative flights or full refunds. Jet fuel typically accounts for 25–30 per cent of an airline's total operating costs, according to the International Air Transport Association.
The war in Iran has disrupted global oil supplies, pushing fuel prices higher and increasing costs for carriers worldwide. In response, some airlines have raised ticket prices, added fuel surcharges, and reduced service on less profitable routes. Delta recently increased baggage fees, while KLM and Lufthansa have announced route reductions to control costs.
