Money Saving Expert (MSE), founded by Martin Lewis, has shared a handy trick that could help easyJet passengers get more items on board without paying for extra luggage. The financial experts highlight a post-security shopping loophole on the easyJet website.
How the loophole works
According to MSE, easyJet allows passengers to bring one shopping bag on board in addition to their standard hand luggage allowance. The airline's website states under 'Accessories' that passengers are permitted to bring extra items such as an umbrella, overcoat, crutches, walking stick, and one standard bag of goods bought at the airport.
MSE advises: "It's worth noting that Easyjet says this must be 'one standard bag of goods bought at the airport' – and of course, we're not suggesting you purchase unnecessarily. But if you do have a carrier bag from duty-free or similar, it'll give you some room for manoeuvre when you walk through the departure gate."
Passenger experiences
Some passengers report they have been able to stuff items that do not fit in their hand luggage into the shopping bag, or even a handbag. Others say they have successfully boarded with a carrier bag they brought from home.
Checked baggage policy
Currently, each easyJet passenger, including children and infants, may purchase up to three checked bags. A standard checked bag allows up to 23kg, with extra weight available in 3kg increments up to a maximum of 32kg per bag. Passengers travelling together on the same booking can combine their total weight allowance, distributing it across all bags as long as no single bag exceeds 32kg. The maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) must not exceed 275cm.
This means travellers who pick up extras after security now have space to bring more on board without incurring additional fees.
