Motorists are being urged to sign up for a free service that could prevent a fine of up to £1,000. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is encouraging drivers to register for its MOT reminder service, which sends alerts before a vehicle's MOT expires.
Why MOT Reminders Matter
An MOT test is a mandatory annual safety and emissions check for most UK vehicles over three years old. It examines brakes, lights, tyres, steering, and exhaust systems to ensure they meet legal roadworthiness and environmental standards. Driving without a valid MOT can result in a fine of up to £1,000, as stated on GOV.UK.
How the Free Service Works
The free MOT reminder service is available through GOV.UK. Once registered, drivers receive a notification one month before their car, van, or motorbike MOT expires. For lorries, buses, or large trailers, alerts are sent two months in advance. To sign up, you need the vehicle's registration plate and a mobile number or email address.
The DVLA shared a post on social media platform X, saying: "Don't forget to add your vehicles to your Driver and vehicles account. You can then view your vehicle details, including when your MOT expires. Not signed up yet? It's easy."
Managing or Cancelling Reminders
Drivers can check when their next reminder is scheduled or unsubscribe if a vehicle is sold, transferred, scrapped, written off, or registered as off the road. Unsubscription can be done by following instructions in the text message or clicking the unsubscribe link in the email.
