A major pet food manufacturer has issued an urgent recall for hundreds of cases of its frozen dog food after customers reported finding pieces of plastic in the product.
Details of the Recall
Fromm Family Foods announced the voluntary recall on Wednesday, 4th December 2024. The action affects its Bonnihill Farms BeefiBowls Beef Recipe frozen dog food, sold in 16-ounce 'chub' packages. The company stated that approximately 300 cases have been recalled following consumer complaints about plastic contamination.
The affected products have a specific best-by date of 25th December 2026. They were distributed to independent pet specialty retailers across more than a dozen states, including:
- Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, Arkansas
- Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana
- California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado
- Oregon, Washington, and Alaska
Health Risks and Consumer Advice
The firm has warned that dogs of any size could suffer adverse health effects from consuming the contaminated food. Ingesting plastic poses a serious risk, potentially leading to gastrointestinal distress and a dangerous intestinal blockage.
Symptoms to watch for in pets include vomiting, a noticeable loss of appetite, unusual lethargy, or signs of abdominal discomfort. The recall notice strongly advises owners whose dogs have eaten the product and are showing any of these signs to contact their veterinarian immediately.
Authorities confirm that, as of the recall announcement, there have been no official reports of illness or injury linked to the affected batches.
Company Response and Further Recalls
Fromm Family Foods has stated that it has identified the source of the problem. "We have identified the error, and in addition to our existing safety process, we have put corrective actions in place to prevent this from happening again," a company representative said.
Owners who have purchased the recalled dog food should immediately stop feeding it to their pets and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
This incident follows another recent recall concerning a popular dog treat—cheese. In October, Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. recalled several brands due to potential metal contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has since reclassified that recall as a Class II event, indicating the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues.
