A host of freebies and discounts are available to anyone over 60, even if they haven't reached state pension age. Money Magpie expert Vicky Parry highlights nine such offers that don't require retirement or drawing a pension.
Free Bus Pass
Rules vary across the UK. In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, you can apply at 60. In England, you need to reach state pension age, except in London where you can apply at 60. Off-peak travel (9am to 11pm weekdays and all day weekends) is typically covered.
Coach Discounts
Over 60s in England and Wales can buy a Senior Coachcard for £15 (plus £3 P&P) for a third off National Express fares. Extra deals include £15 return fares on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when booked three days ahead, and 15% off Fully Flexible fares.
Train Discounts
A Senior Railcard costs £30 per year or £70 for three years, offering savings on many tickets except morning peak-time journeys in London and the South East. Check restrictions before booking.
Tube Travel Oyster Card
London's 60+ Oyster Photocard allows free travel on TfL services from 9am weekdays and anytime on weekends and bank holidays.
Food Discounts
Many restaurants and cafes offer early dinner discounts for over 60s. Dobbies Garden Centres provide a main meal and cake for £12 from 12pm to 3pm Monday to Friday. Iceland and The Food Warehouse give 10% off every Tuesday with no minimum spend.
Theatre and Cinema Discounts
Local cinemas and theatres often offer concessionary rates. ODEON Silver Screen tickets cost just £2 and include free tea, coffee, and biscuits. The National Theatre offers £20 off midweek matinees for over 60s. The Royal Shakespeare Company gives 20% off for over 65s on selected performances.
Specsavers and Boots
Specsavers offers 20% off glasses priced at £70 or more for over 60s. Boots' Over 60s rewards programme gives double Advantage Card points, plus extra points at Boots Hearingcare.
