The proposed powers target those who are not currently receiving benefits or are outside the PAYE system.
Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall stated that the new laws will ensure that those who cheat the welfare system are held accountable. The government described the measure as a last-resort option, with safeguards including staff training and oversight to prevent misuse.
The Conservatives criticised the announcement as a distraction from the government's economic record. Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Helen Whately accused the Chancellor of seeking savings to repair damage from a previous budget. Meanwhile, the DWP reminded the public that benefit fraud can be reported anonymously, and investigations may lead to benefit removal or prosecution.
