Toby Alderweireld Backs Romelu Lukaku for Everton Return in Premier League
Alderweireld Backs Lukaku for Everton Return

Romelu Lukaku needs to go "somewhere he is loved" like Everton. That is according to his former international teammate Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian defender believes the striker could still make a significant impact in the Premier League and has named Everton as a potential destination for a reunion.

Lukaku's Uncertain Future

Lukaku faces an uncertain future after the World Cup, having endured a difficult campaign in Serie A with Napoli. The 33-year-old scored just once in five league appearances during a year blighted by injury. His next step remains unclear, a situation made even more uncertain by Napoli having parted ways with manager Antonio Conte.

For now, Lukaku is focused on the World Cup as he attempts to lead Belgium into the latter stages of the tournament. However, speculation about his club future continues to grow.

Alderweireld's Endorsement

Ahead of the spectacle, ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender Alderweireld, who played alongside the forward on the international stage for years, has suggested Lukaku would benefit from playing at a club where he feels appreciated. Speaking as part of the BOYLE Sports 2 Goals Ahead promotion, Alderweireld said: "I don't know what Romelu Lukaku wants to do, but he can come back to the Premier League, for sure."

"The thing is, I think he needs to go somewhere where he's loved. I think that's very important. I think he wants to go to Anderlecht at the end of his career, but yeah, could he join Everton, Aston Villa or Newcastle? Yeah, why not?"

"I think he can still do a lot of damage in the Premier League."

Everton's Striker Search

Lukaku scored 87 goals across 166 appearances in a four-season spell with Everton before leaving for Manchester United. Now, manager David Moyes is open to signing a striker if a player he believes improves upon current options Thierno Barry and Beto becomes available on suitable terms.

Moyes is, however, reluctant to pour resources into players with troubling injury records, which is one of several hurdles to any potential reunion with Lukaku. The club's transfer strategy will likely depend on available funds and the player's fitness history.
