Newcastle United agree exit of transfer chief Steve Nickson

Newcastle United have agreed the departure of renowned talent spotter Steve Nickson, who is working a notice period after deciding to leave the club earlier this summer. Chronicle Live broke the story exclusively on June 15 that the former Blackburn Rovers scout was set to quit the Magpies after nine years on Tyneside.

Nickson's Key Role in Transfers

Nickson was the key figure in signings such as the £40 million star Joelinton and the bargain £33.3 million signing of Bruno Guimaraes. Even under a limited budget during Mike Ashley's ownership, he sourced talent like Ayoze Perez from Tenerife for just £1.5 million, who was later sold to Leicester City for £30 million. However, his role has changed in recent times, and while he continued to fly around the world scouting targets, a new challenge appears to have been sought.

Interest from Other Clubs

Nickson was initially linked with West Ham after expressing an interest in joining the Hammers. His final destination is still to be revealed, but both Wrexham and Birmingham City have been in the mix for his services.

Newcastle's Recruitment Drive

Newcastle have not yet advertised for a replacement for Nickson, with sporting director Ross Wilson leading the charge on transfers. CEO David Hopkinson and Wilson acknowledge there is room for improvement on recruitment but are working tirelessly to get deals done. So far, the Magpies have brought in Ewen Jaouen, Sean Steur, and Bazoumana Toure, and are eyeing at least three more signings before the start of the season.

Staveley's Praise for Nickson

Nickson was singled out for praise by co-owner Amanda Staveley during her time as director at St James' Park. She said: "Mehrdad and I and our PIF colleagues went up to the club and it was a lonely place. Fortunately, we have an amazing head of recruitment in Steve Nickson, who has been with the club for a long time and has a really deep knowledge of the player markets. So we were able to quickly put together a transfer committee."

Turning the Page

Newcastle are now turning the page on recruitment as they aim to build a younger squad. Under UEFA's scrutiny, the club is entering a three-year process with no room for error, requiring a different approach in the SCR world.
