Tui, one of the UK's leading travel brands and its largest tour operator, has issued a fresh alert to passengers, emphasising a crucial 'two to three hours' rule for those flying with check-in luggage. This update comes as many travellers to and from Europe face extended waiting times at passport control, largely due to the European Union's newly implemented Entry/Exit System (EES).
Understanding the Entry/Exit System Delays
The EES, designed to replace manual passport stamping, introduces a more complex biometric registration process. Travellers from outside the EU must register their faces and provide fingerprints upon first entry into the Schengen Area. This initial registration takes significantly longer than traditional stamping, leading to increased processing times and queues at airports across the continent.
Passenger Concerns and Tui's Response
Many passengers have turned to airlines online, seeking advice on arrival times and check-in openings in anticipation of these delays. On social media platform X, a passenger named Sue Cooper, using the username @Splott42, inquired about bag drop times for an upcoming flight from Stansted to Corfu with Tui.
A Tui spokesperson responded, stating: "Good morning Sue, Short and mid-haul flights: Standard check-in opens at least two-and-a-half to three hours before departure. We do not have a night before bag drop at Stansted I am afraid. I hope you have a fab holiday in Corfu. ^Carol."
Official Guidance from Tui and Airports
On its official website, Tui advises passengers: "The first time you travel under the new system, you may spend a little longer at border control... After checking in your luggage, head straight to border control. During busy times, there might be queues at border control."
Corfu Airport has also issued an important announcement, noting: "The Entry/Exit System (EES) is being applied at border control points, and waiting times are expected to be longer than usual at arrivals and departures." It further advises passengers to arrive early and complete all processing promptly.
Future Travel Changes: ETIAS Launch
Looking ahead, the EU is expected to launch the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in Autumn 2026. This separate travel authorisation will require a €7 fee and a prior online application, adding another layer to travel preparations for non-EU visitors.
For more detailed information, travellers are encouraged to consult the European Union's EES portal or the UK Government's guidance pages for official updates and FAQs.
