Fatal Storms Lash New South Wales
Fierce storms have tragically claimed one life and left a trail of disruption across New South Wales, with more than 35,000 properties suffering power cuts and public transport in Sydney thrown into chaos. The extreme weather event saw early heatwave conditions give way to destructive winds and dry lightning strikes on Wednesday.
Tragedy on the Central Coast
Police have confirmed that a 76-year-old man died after being struck by a falling tree at Glenworth Valley on the Central Coast. The incident occurred at approximately 1.20pm on Wednesday. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the man's injuries were too severe. This tragic event highlights the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the severe weather system.
Widespread Transport and Power Disruption
The impact of the storms has been felt across the state's infrastructure. In Sydney, the public transport network is experiencing significant delays. Train services are not running between Parramatta, Richmond, and St Marys after the severe weather caused damage to the power supply.
A statement from Sydney Trains advised, 'Repair crews are on site and are working to restore train services, however there is no forecast for when train operations will resume.' The operator confirmed that limited trains continue to run between Parramatta and the City, and between St Marys and Penrith / Blue Mountains Line stations.
Commuters are being urged to delay travel, consider using other transport methods, or make their own arrangements if possible. The combination of uprooted trees and power supply issues has created a complex recovery operation for emergency and repair crews.
