A bungalow in the Leicestershire village of Witherley was struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm, resulting in a significant fire that burned off part of its roof. Fire crews from both Warwickshire and Leicestershire rushed to the scene on Orchard Close at approximately 3:45 AM on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
Firefighters Battle Intense Blaze
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the bungalow engulfed in flames. Fortunately, all occupants had already evacuated the property safely. Crews equipped with Breathing Apparatus entered the structure using a ladder to access the roof space, deploying a hose reel jet to combat the spreading fire. However, due to the intensity of the flames bursting through the roof, firefighters were forced to withdraw.
Efforts to Protect Neighbouring Properties
Firefighting efforts were immediately redirected to the adjacent bungalow, successfully preventing the fire from spreading further. Crews from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service remained on the scene to monitor the area and damp down remaining hotspots. A spokesman for Nuneaton Fire Station stated: "Early this morning at 3:45 AM, Nuneaton's White Watch and Polesworth and Leicestershire Fire crews responded to a bungalow fire in Orchard Close, Witherley, following a direct lightning strike. The incident was originally mobilized with persons reported. Upon arrival, crews confirmed that thankfully everyone had managed to exit the properties safely."
