UK Snow Forecast: Weekend Arctic Blast to Bring More Snow and 70mph Winds
UK Weekend Weather: More Snow and 70mph Winds Forecast

Large swathes of the United Kingdom remain in the grip of a bitter cold spell, with significant snowfall this week showing no signs of abating as the weekend approaches. Forecasters are warning that further disruptive weather is on the horizon, with a potent combination of snow, heavy rain, and severe winds set to sweep across the country.

Unsettled Weather Set to Intensify

The current cold snap is expected to persist, but the weather picture is set to become more complex and hazardous. A deep area of low pressure will threaten to bring further snow, strong winds, and heavy rain to southern parts of the UK from Thursday night into Friday morning. This system marks the beginning of another period of highly unsettled conditions.

In the south west, the wind will increasingly become a major hazard. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for gusts of 50-60mph, with the potential for speeds of around 70mph around exposed coasts from Thursday evening into Friday. This could lead to travel disruption and possible damage.

Further Snow and Rain Expected for the Weekend

The respite will be brief, as more turbulent weather is forecast to move in on Sunday. An area of low pressure located to the north west of the UK is predicted to bring further rain, which may be heavy at times. This precipitation will come directly from the west during the day and has the potential to turn back to snow, with strong winds also a possibility.

Temperatures will remain stubbornly below average into the weekend, ensuring that wintry showers and ice continue to pose a hazard on roads and pavements across many regions. The public is advised to stay updated on the latest warnings and travel advice.

Health Warnings and Official Thanks

The prolonged cold is having a serious impact on public services. The UK Health Security Agency has issued amber cold health alerts for all of England until 10am on Friday. This level of alert warns that there could be significant impacts across health and social care services, including a potential rise in deaths, particularly among vulnerable groups such as those aged 65 and over or people with existing health conditions.

Ahead of the expected challenges later in the week, Scottish transport secretary Fiona Hyslop expressed gratitude to frontline workers. She stated: “I’d like to thank all the frontline staff such as gritter drivers, chainsaw gangs, police officers and many others who have been out working in dreadful conditions.”

Residents across the UK are urged to prepare for continued cold weather, check on vulnerable neighbours, and follow official guidance as the nation braces for a weekend of Arctic conditions.
