Lucy Spraggan was in tears as she marked her 35th birthday with devastating news about her dog Steven. The former X Factor star filmed a sad message explaining that her birthday "hasn't been the most amazing birthday" as she lay beside her ageing pet.
Heartbreaking Vet Visit
Spraggan revealed they had been at the vets due to the 13-year-old dog's failing health. "We had a conversation that no dog owner or animal owner ever wants to have and that's about Steven's health and how it's been deteriorating over time," she told followers.
The singer, who rose to fame on the ITV competition in 2012, said she got Steven just before her 22nd birthday and he has been with her through huge moments in her life.
Facing the Future
"Sadly, his health just won't get better," Spraggan said. "And I know he's in pain a lot of the time, and I spoke to the vets today about what that looks like in the future, in the not so distant future."
She continued: "Now, this bout of illness, if it gets better, it gets better. But if it doesn't, we're going to say goodbye to this boy. And I wanted to share this with you because you guys have loved him as much as I have all along the way."
"Nobody ever wants to lose their dog, but I'm so grateful that he has been such an amazing part of my life, and I would never ever let him be in pain for longer than he needs to be," she added.
Gratitude and Support
Spraggan thanked everyone who wished Steven well and said: "Yeah, it sucks. But grief is there because love is there. But I love you, Steven." She admitted she feels her pet thinks "my job is done" as he helped her through so many life moments. She also thanked her wife for "holding us together" during the hard times.
Among those sending love in the comments was Lizzie Cundy, who wrote: "Sending you so much love," with red heart emojis. Megan McKenna also shared her compassion by liking the post.
Spraggan uploaded past memories of Steven to her Instagram Stories, including a clip of him eating crisps as she said: "Nothing makes me happier than Steve eating wotsits."
