Storm Goretti Threatens 20cm Snow and Severe UK Disruption
Storm Goretti: Heavy Snow and Wind to Hit UK

The UK is bracing for a bout of severe wintry weather as Storm Goretti approaches, threatening significant snowfall and disruptive conditions across central and southern regions later this week.

Immediate Icy Hazards Before the Storm

While Wednesday offers a brief respite with drier conditions and sunny spells, the Met Office has warned that many areas continue to face a significant risk of icy surfaces. Meteorologist Alex Burkill urged the public to factor in "a lot of slippery conditions out there" before heading out. Northern Scotland will see sleet and snow showers, while thicker cloud and rain will arrive in Northern Ireland, south-west Wales, and south-west England later in the day.

Overnight, frost and patches of freezing fog are expected in the north and east, with further rain in the west and some snow in the north.

Storm Goretti's Arrival and Snow Warning

The named storm, designated by Meteo France, will sweep in from the south-west on Thursday, bringing a cloudy and cold start. Mr Burkill confirmed the system will affect the UK from Thursday into Friday, delivering strong winds and "significant snow" to central and potentially southern parts.

"As that rain pushes its way and it hits against that cold air... on the northern edge, we are likely to see some fairly significant snow," he explained. The precise northern extent of the heaviest snow remains uncertain, but the meteorologist highlighted a clear risk.

Potential for Severe Travel Disruption

In response, the Met Office has issued a yellow snow warning for a large swathe of England and much of Wales. This alert is active from 6pm on Thursday until midday on Friday. Forecasters warn that heavy snow may lead to travel disruption and difficult driving conditions.

Mr Burkill indicated that accumulations of 20cm or more are possible in some areas, stating that this is "enough to cause some severe disruption." The public is advised to monitor forecasts and travel updates closely as Storm Goretti develops.
