Hundreds of Schools Shut as Amber Snow Warning Hits Northern Scotland
Hundreds of Scottish schools closed by snow disruption

Hundreds of schools across northern Scotland are closed on Monday, 5th January 2026, as severe weather warnings for heavy snow and ice continue to cause widespread disruption to travel and daily life.

Amber Warning Brings Heavy Snowfall

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for heavy snow showers, which remains in place for Shetland, Orkney, and parts of the Highlands and Aberdeenshire until 10 am. This alert predicts significant accumulations, with 5-10cm of snow likely across many areas and isolated spots on the mainland potentially seeing a staggering 20-30cm.

Forecasters warn that strong winds accompanying the snow could lead to drifting and temporary blizzard conditions, severely impacting road visibility and making travel extremely hazardous.

Widespread School Closures and Transport Chaos

The adverse conditions have forced the closure of educational establishments across several regions. Pupils in Shetland, Orkney, the Western Isles, and Aberdeenshire have been given an unexpected day off. In Aberdeen city, schools and Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) provisions will open later at 11 am, with breakfast clubs cancelled.

Transport networks are facing severe challenges. ScotRail has warned of major disruption on routes around Aberdeen and Inverness for much of the day. Network Rail Scotland stated that key lines, including Aberdeen to Dundee, Aberdeen to Inverness, Inverness to Wick/Thurso, and Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, are unlikely to run until at least midday due to heavy and drifting snow.

Official Advice: Delay Travel If Possible

Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution. Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Alan Waddell advised people to plan ahead and consider if their journey is essential. "The forecasted heavy snow showers and ice means driving conditions are likely to be hazardous in some areas," he said. He emphasised not to drive through road closures, which are implemented for public safety.

Scotland’s Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop echoed this advice, noting the return to work for many after the festive break. "If you have to travel then please ensure your vehicle is winter ready and have a winter kit in your car," she stated. Her clear guidance was: "Follow Police Scotland travel advice. If you can delay your journey until the amber warning has expired, please do so."

A further yellow warning for snow and ice extends south across much of the country, including Perth, and remains active until the end of Monday.
