The United Kingdom has basked in the warmest day of the year so far, with provisional temperatures hitting 22.4C in Wales, as people across the nation flocked to beaches and parks to enjoy widespread sunshine.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Across the UK

According to the Met Office, a provisional temperature of 22.4C was recorded in Mona, located on the island of Anglesey in Wales. This marks the highest reading of 2026 to date, with forecasts indicating that temperatures will continue to climb throughout the day, potentially reaching 25C.

Warmer Days Ahead

Wednesday is expected to feel even warmer, particularly in central and south-east England, where temperatures could soar to 26C. This is well above the early April average of 12C to 15C, making it a notable spell of very warm weather for this time of year.

Met Office chief forecaster Paul Gundersen commented: "We're seeing a brief but notable spell of very warm weather for early April, with temperatures more typically associated with late spring or early summer. This could be the warmest spell at this point in April since 2020."

Coastal Towns Embrace the Sunshine

The warmth has coincided perfectly with school Easter holidays, leading to bustling scenes in coastal areas. Brighton and Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey noted: "There really is no place like Brighton when the sun is shining. We're definitely seeing people keen to take advantage of the sunshine today—not just on the beach, but also visiting our brilliant seafront cafes and bars, or enjoying a walk along the prom."

Similarly, a spokesperson for Weymouth Town Council expressed delight: "It's been wonderful to see so many people choosing to enjoy the sun on Weymouth beach. We're looking forward to welcoming more visitors to our town to enjoy all the fun our resort has to offer. Roll on summer!"

Short-Lived Warmth

Despite the current heat, this warm spell is expected to be short-lived. Paul Gundersen warned: "However, this warmth will be short-lived, with a marked drop in temperatures and more unsettled conditions developing later this week. In some areas, daytime temperatures could fall by around 10C between Wednesday and Thursday."

Webcams have shown crowds sunbathing at Lyme Regis beach in Dorset, highlighting the widespread enjoyment of the sunny conditions. The new seafront park in Hove has also been incredibly busy, with families making the most of the school holidays at the skatepark.

As the UK savours this unexpected burst of warmth, residents and visitors alike are urged to make the most of the sunshine while it lasts, before cooler temperatures return later in the week.
