UK Braces for 'Beast from the East' Return with Sub-Zero Temperatures
Freezing conditions are set to grip the United Kingdom in early March, with weather maps indicating temperatures could plummet to as low as -13C. According to forecasts from WXCharts, a significant cold snap reminiscent of the 'Beast from the East' is predicted to impact large parts of the country from March 9 onwards.
Widespread Impact Across Cities
The chilling weather is expected to affect numerous UK cities, including northern Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester. WXCharts' data suggests that these areas will experience wintry conditions, with icy blue snow maps highlighting the severity of the impending freeze. This forecast raises concerns about potential disruptions to travel and daily life as Brits prepare for the harsh cold.
Met Office Forecast and Current Conditions
In contrast, the Met Office's official outlook for the period beginning March 10 describes "changeable conditions" with Atlantic frontal systems spreading across the UK. These systems are likely to bring spells of rain and strong winds, particularly affecting the northwest regions. The southeast may see drier weather, possibly developing into longer dry spells later in the month. Overall, temperatures are anticipated to be near or slightly above normal, but this could shift as the cold front approaches.
For the immediate week ahead, the Met Office reports a damp start on Tuesday, brightening up in southern and central areas with sunny spells. However, cloudy skies and rain are expected elsewhere. From Wednesday to Friday, rain will dominate in the north and west, while the southeast enjoys pleasant sunshine. Thursday is forecast to be wetter and windier nationwide, followed by cooler conditions with sunshine and showers on Friday.
Flood Warnings Add to Concerns
Compounding the weather worries, the Environment Agency has issued 49 flood warnings across England. Ongoing groundwater flooding is probable in parts of the South of England over the next five days, with river flooding also likely in areas like Somerset. This poses risks of property damage and travel disruption. The current flood warnings include:
- A361 East Lyng to Burrowbridge
- B1040 Thorney to Whittlesey Road to the South of the River Nene
- Curry Moor and Hay Moor
- Groundwater flooding for multiple valleys including Avon, Bere Stream, and Wylye Valley
- River Coln from Fossebridge to Quennington
- River Parrett at Langport Westover Trading Estate
- River Severn at Apperley and The Leigh
- River Thames for Shiplake, Lower Shiplake and Wargrave
- Salt Moor and North Moor including Moorland
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay vigilant and follow updates from local authorities as the situation develops.
