The United Kingdom's record-breaking May heatwave is poised to come to a dramatic conclusion as forecasters predict two days of torrential rain sweeping across the nation. According to the Met Office, a blanket of heavy precipitation will move in from the west after 11pm on Sunday, gradually progressing eastward before easing by Tuesday.
Heavy Rainfall Expected
Some regions could experience up to 8mm of rainfall per hour, with Scotland bracing for particularly intense downpours of up to 16mm per hour on Tuesday morning. The sudden change in weather patterns follows recent highs of 35.1°C, marking one of the hottest Mays on record.
Temperature Plunge
Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, settling into the late teens and early 20s Celsius, which is more typical for this time of year. The remainder of the week is forecast to bring further unsettled conditions, including spells of rain, showers, thunderstorms, and even a chance of hail.
The abrupt end to the heatwave serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of British weather, as residents swap sunbathing for umbrellas in a matter of hours.
