Met Office Issues Yellow Warning: 60-80mm Rain to Hit UK
UK Braces for Heavy Rain and Flooding

The Met Office has confirmed a spell of wet and windy weather is set to sweep across the United Kingdom, prompting official warnings for potential disruption.

Warnings Issued for Heavy Rainfall

Forecasters have issued a yellow weather warning for parts of south-west England and Wales. The alert is in place for heavy and persistent rain expected from 6pm on Monday for 24 hours.

Some areas could see up to 40mm of rainfall, with the highest ground on Dartmoor and in south Wales forecast to receive between 60mm and 80mm. This volume may exceed half the average rainfall for the entire month of December in these locations.

Persistent Winds and Existing Flood Risk

The unsettled conditions follow a night of damaging gusts, which reached speeds of up to 40mph in East Sussex overnight into Saturday. More than a dozen flood warnings remain active across England, Scotland, and Wales as a result of the recent severe weather.

While temperatures will stay mild, gusty winds and further rainfall are predicted to persist, particularly affecting south Wales, south-west England, and Cumbria. This combination is likely to lead to difficult travel conditions over the coming days.

Further Disruption Expected Next Week

The situation is expected to develop early next week as a deepening area of low pressure approaches the UK on Monday. This system is forecast to bring additional heavy rain and strong winds.

The Met Office has indicated that this could lead to further disruption, with the likelihood of more severe weather warnings being issued. In London, the charity St Mungo's has activated an orange cold weather warning to protect homeless people from the harsh conditions.

Residents in affected regions are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and travel information.
