April is traditionally associated with showers, but last month the United Kingdom experienced rainfall that was 23 percent below the long-term average, according to the Met Office. Conditions varied across regions, yet overall, April was drier, warmer, and sunnier than the typical meteorological expectations.
Why Was April So Dry?
Met Office Scientist Dr Emily Carlisle explained that prolonged periods of high pressure, bringing clearer skies, kept rain away for much of the month. 'In parts of England, we simply haven't seen many "April showers", with weather systems passing further north,' she said. This left some areas with very little rainfall, while parts of Scotland saw above-average totals due to exposure to Atlantic systems.
Regional Differences
The Met Office's figures show that last month was the seventh warmest April on record, with mild temperatures across the UK. It was also the fourth sunniest April on record, with above-average sunshine in all four nations. Dr Carlisle noted that the overall dry signal masks pronounced regional differences. Persistent high pressure kept rain-bearing systems away from southern and eastern England, leading to notably low rainfall in areas such as East Anglia. In contrast, parts of northwest Scotland remained more exposed to Atlantic systems, especially during the first half of the month, resulting in above-average rainfall there. 'These patterns are a good example of how the same month can look very different depending on where you are in the UK,' she added.
Bank Holiday Weekend Forecast
Despite the dry April, the bank holiday weekend is expected to bring rain across much of the UK, with flood warnings in some areas. The Met Office's five-day forecast predicts that today will be 'very warm' for many, with southern locations like London potentially reaching 26°C. However, thundery showers could arrive from this evening. Saturday will be 'rather cloudy' for most, with outbreaks of rain, especially over Northern Ireland, while eastern England will experience the driest conditions with warm sunshine. Looking ahead, Sunday will see early rain clearing to sunshine and showers, and early next week will be cooler with sunny spells and lighter showers.
Public Reaction
The forecast has disappointed many Brits heading into the bank holiday weekend. On social media, one person vented on X: '24 degrees Friday but then raining the next 5 days. UK weather got everyone’s moods on a string.' Another added: 'Hotter than Hawaii here today! But then raining at the weekend, bank holiday so standard.' A user joked: 'Weather has been beautiful all week, but as soon as it’s bank holiday weekend we all need inflatable boats to get around.' On TikTok, one user questioned: 'Does anyone ever wonder how the weather knows it's a bank holiday weekend?' Another said: 'I swear the weather thinks to itself "oh its a bank holiday here we gooooooo, its time to rain".' Some even speculated about manipulation, with one asking: 'kinda makes you wonder if it's manipulated seems to happen every holiday.'
