UK Braces for Return of Snow as Temperatures Set to Plunge Again
Snow Forecast as UK Temperatures Expected to Plummet

The UK is preparing for another bout of wintry weather, with forecasters warning of a significant drop in temperatures and an increased risk of snow before the end of January. This comes just weeks after Storm Goretti caused widespread disruption across the country.

Aftermath of a 'Multi-Hazard' Storm

The warning follows the severe impact of Storm Goretti, which the Met Office classified as a "multi-hazard event." Earlier this month, the storm unleashed gusts approaching 100mph and triggered a rare red wind warning for parts of south-west England. The consequences were tragic and widespread.

In Helston, Cornwall, police confirmed that a man in his 50s died after a tree fell onto his caravan. The storm's fury led to cancelled flights, major train disruptions, and the closure of hundreds of schools, bringing daily life to a standstill in many regions.

The Forecast Battle: Atlantic Mild vs. Eastern Cold

According to the Met Office, the UK's weather from next week will be defined by a climatic tug-of-war. Milder Atlantic air systems will fight for dominance against colder high pressure building from the east. Initially, the Atlantic influence is expected to win, bringing cloudy, changeable conditions with showers and average temperatures for the time of year.

However, the balance is predicted to shift as January draws to a close. The forecaster states there is now an "increased chance" that colder conditions will push in from the east, causing temperatures to plummet once more.

Increased Snow Risk for Late January

This potential shift to a colder pattern significantly raises the likelihood of snowfall across parts of the UK. A Met Office spokesperson emphasised that while details remain uncertain, the transition brings a clear hazard. "This aspect of the forecast is still somewhat uncertain," they said, "but the potential transition to colder weather also increases the chance of snow across parts of the country."

Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation develops, with the possibility of further travel disruption and icy conditions on the horizon for the final week of January.
