Met Office warns of more wet and windy weather this week

The Met Office has warned of more "wet and windy" weather this week after Storms Austen and Boelo brought widespread disruption across the UK. By the end of the week, however, more settled conditions are expected.

Weekend Storm Impact

Gusts of up to 65mph battered Greater Manchester, bringing down dozens of trees and blocking roads in areas including Cheadle, Gatley, Burnage and Wythenshawe. Electricity North West reported 146 power cuts across the North West on Sunday evening, with around 200 homes in Ashton-in-Makerfield losing power.

Multiple flights were cancelled and 'do not travel' warnings were issued across the region. Metrolink services between East Didsbury and St Werburghs Road were also disrupted after a tree fell on the line.

Ongoing Wind Warnings

A Met Office yellow wind warning remains in place for parts of north-west England including Cumbria from 6pm on Monday until 3am on Tuesday, with gusts of up to 50mph expected. A further warning covers Scotland on Tuesday, where gusts could reach as high as 70mph.

The Met Office said that while the start of the week will see a continuation of wind and rain, "calmer weather" is expected by the end of the week, as there are signs of higher pressure building across the country.

Midweek Weather Change

The "main change" in the weather is forecast to arrive overnight on Wednesday, as the Met Office explains: "As the isobars spread further apart, winds will become much lighter, particularly across central and eastern areas."

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates said: "While the start of this week will be notably wet and windy, high pressure is expected to bring a quieter spell of weather later in the week. From Wednesday, high pressure will start to build which will ease the winds and bring a quieter and largely drier end to the week for many, although some rain is still possible in the north and west."
