Storm Boelo Scotland LIVE: Yellow wind warning as 80mph gusts loom

A yellow wind warning has come into effect across Scotland as Storm Boelo threatens gusts of up to 80mph this weekend. The warning started at midday on Saturday, with an amber alert set to follow at 9pm, lasting until 9pm on Sunday. Only Orkney remains under the yellow warning.

The warnings cover much of Scotland from Saturday into Sunday, as Storm Boelo arrives a day after Storm Austen brought heavy rain to many areas on Friday.

Met Office issues warning on flying debris and power cuts

The Met Office has warned of potential injuries and danger to life from flying debris, as well as a chance of damage to buildings, power cuts and travel disruption.

“Very strong westerly winds associated with Storm Boelo are expected, with fairly widespread gusts of 60 to 70mph and gusts to 80mph in exposed coastal areas,” the Met Office said.

“The strongest winds will initially affect western Scotland and the far north of Northern Ireland on Saturday evening and then spread eastwards overnight and through Sunday.”

Fresh yellow warning for Tuesday

A new yellow weather warning for wind has been issued from 3am on Tuesday (October 27) until midnight across the entire country. The national forecaster warns that a period of strong winds may lead to damaging gusts and transport disruption.

The Met Office states: "Strong west to southwesterly winds are expected to spread across much of Scotland, the north of Northern Ireland and northern England on Tuesday."

“Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible quite widely and some coastal or exposed areas could see gusts of 70 mph or more, but at this time there is some uncertainty in where, and how strong, the peak gusts will be. The strongest of the winds will reduce from the southwest later on Tuesday, with the far north of Scotland the last to see winds ease.”

Amber warning for 'life-threatening' winds

The amber weather warning will be in force from 9pm on Saturday (October 24) until 9pm on Sunday evening (October 25). It covers much of the country, including Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, Strathclyde and SW Scotland, and Lothian Borders.

Forecasters expect widespread gusts of between 60 and 70mph, with winds potentially reaching 80mph in exposed coastal areas. The amber warning has been issued due to the high likelihood and significant impact Storm Boelo will have across Scotland.
