Google Cloud outage disrupts UK banking, Revolut, Lloyds, HSBC

Revolut customers in the UK are facing disruption to card payments, transfers, cash withdrawals and account sign-ins after a Google Cloud outage, with Lloyds Bank, HSBC and Royal Mail among other services also affected.

The fintech firm, which serves millions of customers across the UK, reported problems with multiple services on Tuesday morning. More than 1,500 people flagged issues with Revolut on the Downdetector platform, according to reports.

Revolut Confirms Disruption

A Revolut spokesperson said: "We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers' money and data are safe. We've been working to fix the issue since it was identified this morning and apologise to anyone affected and for any inconvenience caused."

The problem is believed to be connected to an IT incident involving Google Cloud. Google flagged difficulties with multiple services in the "Europe-west2" region, thought to be London, from late on Monday evening.

Google Investigates Network Failures

The tech giant stated this was causing Cloud services to encounter errors and intermittent network failures. "Our engineering team continues to investigate the issue," Google said on its service health page. "We apologise to all who are affected by the disruption."

Hundreds of Lloyds Bank and HSBC customers were also logging complaints on Downdetector, alongside platforms such as Royal Mail, DPD and Rightmove.

Other Services Affected

Budgeting app Emma informed its customers it was offline as a result of the Google Cloud outage. The company posted on X: "Emma is currently down due to a Google Cloud outage affecting services in London since 7am. This is a technical outage, not a security issue. We're monitoring closely and will update here as soon as the app is back. Sorry for the disruption."

Halifax, which is owned by Lloyds Banking Group, replied to a user on X stating it was "aware some customers are having issues with our app and online", adding: "We're sorry about this and are working hard to fix it."
