Storm Boelo has led to the cancellation of dozens of flights across the UK this weekend, with up to 100 services grounded as strong winds and heavy rain continue to affect the country. Six weather warnings for wind and rain have been issued, several of which remain active, with forecasts of “damaging gusts” and a “danger to life” from flying debris, leaving thousands of homes without power.
The disruption follows closely on the heels of Storm Austen, with Scotland recording the strongest gusts so far at 84mph. Airports affected include Heathrow, Manchester, Belfast International and Edinburgh.
Warnings in place until tonight
The severe weather is expected to persist until 9pm tonight, when the final warnings – a yellow wind warning and an amber wind warning – are due to expire. The alerts cover the whole of Scotland, northern England and northern Wales.
The Met Office said: “Sunday will remain wet and windy across Scotland and northern England. Heavy rain is expected to continue across northern and north-eastern Scotland for much of the day.”
“Behind the main area of rain, showers will affect Northern Ireland and northwest England. Some could be heavy, with a chance of thunder, and a few may travel farther east across England,” the Met Office added.
Forecast for the rest of the UK
“Wales, southern England and south-eastern England should have a considerably drier day than Saturday. Nevertheless, strong and gusty winds will continue, making it feel chilly even during brighter spells,” the Met Office said.
“Temperatures will generally reach between 11°C and 14°C. However, the strength of the wind, especially in northern areas, will make it feel colder than the temperature suggests.”
The unsettled conditions are expected to continue into the beginning of next week as the jet stream remains strong. Another area of low pressure could bring further wet and windy weather on Monday, with parts of the North-west likely to experience the most unsettled conditions.
