The Met Office's latest weather maps indicate that parts of northern Scotland will experience snowfall this week, with patches expected on Wednesday and Thursday, despite the UK approaching summer.
Snow Forecast for Scotland
According to current predictions, small pockets of snow will appear over several counties in northern Scotland. The areas affected include Argyllshire, Inverness-shire, Ross & Cromarty, Sutherland, and Perthshire. Snow is notoriously difficult to forecast, as minor changes in temperature and moisture can determine whether precipitation falls as snow or rain.
The UK has recently enjoyed mild late-spring weather, with temperatures in some regions reaching the mid-20s Celsius. Many households have prepared gardens and purchased suncream in anticipation of warmer days. However, cooler conditions will persist in some northern areas.
Rain and Cooler Temperatures
In addition to snow, the Met Office predicts rain moving slowly across northern Scotland from Monday, with overcast conditions elsewhere. The forecast states: "Turning cooler for all as northerly winds set in across the UK. Some showers at times, though these lighter and fewer than the weekend with sunny spells emerging as well."
From Friday, May 8, a "rather unsettled theme" is expected, though predictions remain uncertain. The forecast adds: "Most places are therefore likely to see some rain or showers at times, but also some drier, brighter weather. The emphasis on wetter conditions may be more towards the south at first, with low pressure perhaps more likely towards the south of the UK, before shifting further north later in the period."
Outlook for Late May
During the latter half of the month, low-pressure systems are expected to dominate, bringing showers or prolonged rainfall that could be heavy in some areas. Temperatures are likely to be near normal in the south but on the cool side in the north initially, recovering to around normal later.
