A major industrial fire broke out in Port Talbot, Wales, on Wednesday afternoon, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and prompting warnings for residents to keep windows shut. Emergency services were called to Dock Road at 3:36pm, with crews from multiple fire stations across the region responding to the blaze.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service deployed teams from Port Talbot, Neath, Morriston, Ammanford, Tumble, Carmarthen, Pontarddulais and Glynneath to tackle the fire. Witnesses reported plumes of smoke rising several metres high, visible from as far as Mumbles, and images showed smoke dominating the skyline.
Police advised nearby residents to close windows and doors as a precaution due to heavy smoke. Officials urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles clear access. The incident also caused traffic disruption on the M4 motorway between junctions 41 and 40, with smoke drifting across the carriageway leading to slow-moving conditions.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and authorities have asked for patience while crews continue their efforts. The situation remains ongoing.
