London set for 10 dry days after storms

London is set for a period of dry weather after two named storms caused havoc over the weekend. According to the Met Office, Monday has been the first of at least ten straight days without rainfall in the city.

Storm Austen was swiftly followed by Storm Boelo, with thousands across the south of England left without power as 80mph winds battered the country. London's annual Diwali on the Square celebrations were cancelled on independent health and safety experts' recommendation, while a man in his 20s died in north London after a falling tree crushed his car while he was driving.

Drier conditions ahead

With the storm's passing, the outlook for the coming days looks far less bleak in the capital. While yellow weather warnings remain in place for parts of Scotland and western areas of the UK this week, drier and brighter conditions are expected to prevail in London.

Throughout the country, conditions are set to settle down from Wednesday due to high pressure, with showers expected to become less frequent and with many areas staying dry and seeing some sunny spells.

Temperature outlook

Approaching the weekend, London and the southeast is likely to see brighter weather, and temperatures are expected to remain close to, or slightly above, average for the time of year, according to the national forecaster. Throughout the next ten days, the Met Office is predicting highs of around 16C, with slightly cooler temperatures over the coming weekend.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates said: “From Wednesday, high pressure will start to build which will ease the winds and bring a quieter and largely drier end to the week for many, although some rain is still possible in the north and west.”
