British forces have boarded an alleged Russian shadow fleet vessel for the first time during a six-hour operation off England's south coast. Royal Marine Commandos, alongside specially-trained law enforcement officers from the National Crime Agency, boarded the Smyrtos vessel in the early hours of Sunday.
Operation Details
The interdiction in the English Channel was supported by Chinook, Merlin, and Wildcat helicopters, an RAF P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, as well as the Royal Navy's HMS Sutherland and HMS Ledbury. The operation marks a significant escalation in the UK's response to Russian maritime activities.
Strategic Implications
This move is seen as a major blow to President Vladimir Putin, with fears of World War III escalating. Defence experts have warned about the growing threat from Russia's shadow fleet, which is used to evade sanctions and conduct covert operations.
The UK government has not yet released an official statement, but the operation underscores the country's commitment to protecting its waters and upholding international law.
