A Jet2 flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Manchester Airport after being struck by lightning. The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 9, at around 4:30 PM, prompting a swift response from fire crews.
Emergency Response
Two fire engines from Wythenshawe and Cheadle, along with a technical response unit from Leigh, were deployed to the runway at Manchester Airport. The aircraft had departed from Leeds Bradford and was en route to the Canary Islands when the lightning strike forced an unexpected diversion.
Passenger Transfer
Manchester Airport confirmed that passengers were transferred onto a replacement aircraft and were able to continue their journey. A spokesperson for the airport stated: "It departed from Leeds Bradford. At some point it was struck by lightning and had to come back here. It circled around over Liverpool way for a little while and then came to us. Passengers have been transferred onto a different aircraft that was already on the ground here. If they aren't already on their way, they will be on their way very soon."
Fire Service Statement
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just after 4:30 PM this afternoon, three fire engines from Wythenshawe and Cheadle fire station, along with the Technical Response Unit from Leigh, attended an incident on Ringway Road, Manchester. Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour."
The quick response ensured the safety of all passengers and crew, with no injuries reported.
