Cloudflare has confirmed it is investigating a fiber cut in Eastern North America after popular internet services including X (formerly Twitter) and Fortnite experienced disruptions on June 22. The company stated that the issue stems from a network provider, Zayo, which is experiencing an outage on some of its routes.
Services Affected and User Reports
Users across Europe and North America reported increased latencies and timeouts. Downdetector recorded over 11,000 reports of issues with X by 2:54 PM, peaking at 11,800 just before 3 PM. Affected regions included the US, UK, Greece, France, and Algeria. Fortnite users also reported login problems, with one user stating, "I can't log into Fortnite and when I try to it says there was a problem." Some users noted issues with Discord and Zoom as well.
Cloudflare's Official Response
In a statement, a Cloudflare spokesperson said: "We don’t see any Cloudflare global outage currently. The only issue we’re aware of is that Zayo, a network provider, is experiencing an outage on some of its network routes. That may cause some sites using Zayo exclusively to be unreachable, whether they use Cloudflare or not. We are seeing evidence Zayo’s network is recovering and expect any errors to be short lived."
Cloudflare added that engineers are continuing traffic engineering work to mitigate the impact. The company initially noted that customers connecting through North America or accessing services in Europe may experience issues.
Impact on Internet Services
The fiber cut disrupted multiple platforms. X users faced difficulties loading feeds, while Fortnite players encountered errors during login. A user commented, "Fortnite and X BOTH down? I’m gonna order some Door Dash and listen to Spotify, this is ridiculous." The outage highlights the reliance on network providers like Zayo for internet connectivity.
