Air fryers have become a must-have kitchen gadget for millions of Brits, promising healthier fried food with less oil. But experts are now warning about a potentially dangerous setting that many users might be using incorrectly.
The Hidden Danger in Your Air Fryer
While air fryers are generally safe when used properly, there's one particular function that could be causing unnecessary wear and tear on your appliance - or worse, creating potential safety hazards.
"Many users don't realise that constantly using the preheat function can actually shorten your air fryer's lifespan," explains kitchen appliance expert Sarah Wilkinson. "It's designed for occasional use, not as a regular feature."
Why Preheating Isn't Always Best
Contrary to popular belief, most air fryer foods don't actually require preheating:
- Preheating wastes energy without significantly improving cooking results
- Frequent temperature spikes stress the appliance's components
- It adds unnecessary time to your cooking process
"For about 90% of foods, you can skip the preheat and just add a minute or two to your cooking time," Wilkinson advises.
Safety First: Other Common Mistakes
Beyond the preheat issue, there are several other air fryer habits that could be putting your appliance at risk:
- Overfilling the basket: This restricts airflow and can lead to uneven cooking
- Using aerosol sprays: These can damage the non-stick coating
- Neglecting to clean: Built-up grease becomes a fire hazard
By avoiding these common pitfalls, you can extend your air fryer's lifespan and ensure safer cooking experiences.
