Gmail's Free AI Upgrade: Smart Inbox Features Coming to UK Users
Gmail's Free AI Upgrade: New Features for UK Users

Google has confirmed a significant and free upgrade is on its way to Gmail, promising to transform the email experience for its billions of users worldwide. The tech giant announced a suite of new AI-powered features designed to turn cluttered inboxes into a streamlined, personalised command centre.

What's New in the Gmail Upgrade?

The update, which begins its rollout in the United States before arriving in the UK over the coming months, introduces three core improvements. The headline feature is AI Overviews. This allows users to search their entire email history using natural language questions. For instance, asking "Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?" will prompt Gmail to find the relevant emails and summarise the key details automatically.

This same technology can also condense lengthy email threads into clear, concise summaries of the main points, saving users from scrolling through endless replies.

Enhanced Writing and Proofreading Tools

Google is also boosting its writing assistance within Gmail. Help Me Write and Suggested Replies will be available to all users for free, helping to draft and refine emails more easily. These tools can generate context-aware responses that match a user's personal tone and style.

For those seeking more advanced help, a new Proofread tool will offer sophisticated grammar, tone, and style suggestions. However, this feature will not be free; it will be exclusive to subscribers of Google's Google AI Pro and Ultra plans.

Tackling Email Overload with AI Filters

A key aim of the update is to help users manage information overload. New AI-powered inbox filters will, when enabled, prioritise important messages and provide a clear overview of pending tasks and deadlines.

Another innovative addition is the "Catch me up" feature. This provides a snapshot of important life updates buried in your inbox, such as upcoming travel reservations, delivery notifications, purchases, and any cancelled or rescheduled events.

In a blog post, Google stated, "Today, 3 billion users rely on Gmail to connect and get things done... But email has evolved dramatically since Gmail launched in 2004. With inboxes busier than ever, managing information has become just as important as managing messages. That’s why we’re bringing Gmail into the Gemini era and turning it into a personal, proactive inbox assistant."
