Transport for London has launched an 18-month pilot scheme on a road in the capital, painting optical illusion speed bumps to encourage drivers to stay within the 20mph limit. The black and white stencilled images are designed to appear three-dimensional, creating a visual trick that prompts motorists to slow down.
The initiative aims to reduce speeding without the need for physical speed bumps, which can cause discomfort and vehicle damage. The painted versions are cheaper to install and maintain, and they do not affect emergency vehicles or cyclists.
Early reactions from local residents have been mixed, with some praising the innovative approach while others express skepticism about its effectiveness. The trial will be monitored over the coming months to assess its impact on traffic speeds and safety.
