Mexico secured a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Czechia in their final Group A match at the 2026 World Cup, maintaining their perfect record and eliminating the European side from the tournament. The win, powered by a standout performance from 17-year-old Gilberto Mora and goals from Mateo Chávez, Julián Quiñones, and substitute Álvaro Fidalgo, ensured Mexico finished top of the group with nine points and no goals conceded.
Mora Shines as Youngest Starter Since 2002
Gilberto Mora became the youngest player to start a World Cup match since Nigeria's Femi Opabunmi in 2002, and the sixth-youngest of all time, at 17 years, 7 months, and 28 days. Despite his slight 5ft 6in frame, Mora's touch and vision captivated the crowd. A first-half turn, taking the ball with the outside of his right foot and spinning away from traffic, drew comparisons to Lionel Messi. His pass to Luis Romo six minutes into the second half carved open the Czechia defence, though the chance was wasted.
Chávez and Quiñones Strike in Second Half
Mexico broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half when left-back Mateo Chávez surged through the inside-right channel and finished calmly. Six minutes later, a run from full-back Jorge Sánchez led to a goal: an attempted clearance cannoned off his tumbling body, allowing Julián Quiñones to tuck in his second of the tournament. Substitute Álvaro Fidalgo slammed in a third in injury time to cap the rout.
Ochoa Enters to Standing Ovation
Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, a month shy of his 41st birthday, came off the bench in the 72nd minute to a standing ovation. It was his sixth World Cup appearance, making him the sixth-oldest player in World Cup history. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre called it "the night of Memo Ochoa" and described the match as "the most emotional moment" of his career, surpassing even his playing days in 1986.
Czechia Exit Without a Fight
Czechia coach Miroslav Koubek left out experienced campaigners Patrik Schick and Tomas Soucek, handing control to a young side. Soucek came on but landed awkwardly and left in distress. Koubek said, "It was probably our best performance of the tournament. But unfortunately, we let the opponent break us." Czechia became the 14th team in a row to fail to score against Mexico in the first half of a World Cup game, and they offered little in the second half either.
Mexico March On
With three straight wins without conceding a goal, Mexico advance to the knockout stage as group winners. Aguirre made five changes to his lineup, resting some starters, but the team's depth proved decisive. The victory sent Czechia out of the tournament without leaving a trace, as they became the 14th side eliminated from the Uefa playoff teams.
