Motorists can reduce the chances of failing their annual MOT test by checking four crucial things before their annual assessment, according to a leading expert.

Cherie Carter, Director at Indigo Car Hire, stressed that conducting checks ahead of the DVSA test was absolutely vital to ensure road users gave themselves the best chance of passing. With lighting and tyre problems among the most common reasons that vehicles fail MOT tests, giving these two parts a once over could be a quick way to improve the likelihood of securing a pass certificate.
Meanwhile, checking screen wash levels and wiper blades are another two checks that anyone can do from their driveways that could have a big impact during the test.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Cherie said: "A pre-MOT test gives yourself the best possible chance to fix simple things before they become official fails on record.
"Whether it's low screen wash, worn wiper blades, damaged bulbs or worn tyres; these issues can be identified within a few minutes.
"It can also help with your budgeting. Many drivers are caught unaware when they get the phone call a couple of hours after dropping their car off. By doing a pre-test, you can plan any repairs in advance and avoid being without your car any longer than necessary."
Consequences of failing
Not checking parts before an MOT test can be risky, with motorists at risk of losing their freedom to drive altogether. Drivers are unable to drive vehicles that pick up a "dangerous" defect.
