Harry Kane is preparing for a rematch against Panama in England's final group game of the World Cup, recalling his hat-trick in the 6-1 victory in 2018. That performance secured him the Golden Boot, but Kane admits the third goal was fortunate—a deflection off his heel from Ruben Loftus-Cheek's shot. "A couple of pens and a lucky goal. It wasn't my most beautiful hat-trick. I'll take that again on Saturday, for sure," Kane said.
England's Gristly Ghana Draw Exposes Limitations
England's 0-0 draw against an ultra-defensive Ghana in Boston was a frustrating affair. Kane was man-marked by Thomas Partey and struggled to find space. His best chance came in the 86th minute, but he blazed over from close range. Despite the miss, Kane remains unperturbed. "It's part of a striker's life. I've had many chances go my way this year—chances that probably shouldn't have gone in. There is also a feeling in football that it just doesn't go your way," he said.
The draw was England's fourth consecutive tournament where the second group game proved difficult, following draws against Scotland, Denmark, and the United States. However, Kane emphasized the importance of staying balanced: "This is the fourth tournament in a row where the second game hasn't gone as well as we would have liked. But, ultimately, it's four tournaments in a row where we pretty much qualified after two games so it's nothing to be ashamed of."
Tuchel Defends Kane's Role
Manager Thomas Tuchel dismissed suggestions that England are overly reliant on Kane, comparing his situation to Argentina's reliance on Lionel Messi or France's on Kylian Mbappé. "Harry loves the responsibility. We rely on him but we don't overrely on him," Tuchel said. He did not consider substituting Kane for Ollie Watkins or Ivan Toney late in the game, arguing that at 0-0, Kane is the player you want on the pitch for a big chance.
Kane echoed that sentiment: "I don't think there is an overreliance. Any No 9 at a big team … people expect them to score goals and it's no different for me." He added that the team is in a good place, with the group stage focused on getting through and finding rhythm, while the knockout stage will be a different challenge.
Panama Rematch and Team Adjustments
Kane expects Tuchel to make some changes to the lineup against Panama but is determined to play. "It wouldn't surprise me if he made some changes and kept the team fresh," Kane said. A win would likely see England top the group, completing phase one of the tournament. Kane is already looking ahead, scenting another Golden Boot opportunity against Panama.
