FIFA officials were forced to intervene after a heated confrontation between South Africa and South Korea in the mixed zone following South Africa's 2026 World Cup victory. The Bafana Bafana's jubilant celebrations, triggered by Thapelo Maseko's goal that secured a 1-0 win and lifted them above South Korea into second place in Group A, spilled over into the interview area, disrupting South Korean players who were giving media interviews.
Celebrations Spark Tensions
South Africa's players, singing loudly as they passed through the mixed zone, created such a volume that it overwhelmed the interviews being conducted with South Korean stars. Journalists and South Korean national team staff requested the South African group to lower their voices, but according to reports, this only encouraged the victors to celebrate more exuberantly. One South African team official reportedly slowed his pace while moving through the zone and adopted a 'confrontational attitude' when a South Korean colleague signaled for them to hurry up.
Hwang In-beom Confronts Official
Feyenoord star Hwang In-beom, visibly frustrated, stopped his interview and yelled at the South African official: "Hurry up and move. Please show some respect." The situation escalated before FIFA media personnel and South Korean national team staff defused the incident, allowing Hwang to continue his interview. "Rather than pointing to a specific cause, the poor result came because we were lacking in many areas overall," Hwang said. "Anything I say will sound like an excuse. Ultimately, we lost because we weren't good enough, and if we are given another opportunity, we will need to approach it with more desperation."
Son Heung-min Apologises to Teammates
South Korea captain Son Heung-min, who started the match on the bench despite his 56 goals in 147 caps, was unable to make a significant impact after coming on in the second half. The LAFC attacker expressed his disappointment and apologised to his teammates. "It's so frustrating that the match didn't go the way we wanted it to, and we as players are obviously very disappointed," Son said. "I feel sorry to my teammates that I didn't give them much help on the pitch."
South Korea's Fate Uncertain
South Korea must now wait to see if they advance as one of the best third-placed teams, while South Africa progress to the last 32. Hwang Hee-chan also reflected on the loss: "The result is obviously very disappointing. Personally, I feel a great sense of regret that I couldn't capitalise on various chances or produce a result from the front, and I feel sorry for my teammates."
