Ahmedabad has vowed not to repeat the mistakes of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games after being confirmed as the host for the 2030 edition. Organisers said 15 to 17 sports would feature, including athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowls and netball, with Twenty20 cricket and triathlon provisionally listed.
The Indian city was selected ahead of Abuja, Nigeria, and received final approval at Commonwealth Sport's general assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday. With India targeting the 2036 Summer Olympics, organisers stressed the Gujarat Games would prove they could host a large multi-sport event without hiccups.
Shri Ashwini Kumar, Gujarat's principal sports secretary, acknowledged the 2010 Games faced “some challenges”, including murky swimming pool water and cobras in the athletes' village, but insisted preparations were ahead of schedule. “Most of the venues are already ready. The funding has been secured,” he said.
Dr PT Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, pledged a “strong, inclusive, future-ready” event that would “lay the foundation for the next century”. The 2030 Games will mark 100 years of the Commonwealth movement.
